Sports are powerful. They always have been and most likely always will be. So many people live and breathe through the success of their teams. And yes tragically some even die at the cost of supporting them. Ever seen a fan melee break out at an overseas soccer match?
Athletes have a platform. They are famous and it is us fans who made them famous. Now they can use that fame and deliver messages that others can’t deliver.
Thank God most do great things. Somehow I don’t think I would have raised $10.5 million dollars on a go fund me page for Hurricane relief in Houston as JJ Watt of the Houston Texans was able to do. Just like I don’t think I could raise awareness about social injustice going on in the Country as the NFL players have.
I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with anything I am just saying we fans gave the players the platform to do this. We’re the ones who made sports a multi billion dollar business and the reason players are making the money they are making.
Cable has changed the scope of sports. Have you ever flipped through the channels on Saturday during college football season or any night during college basketball season. There must be 10 games to choose from all day long.
How much money did Floyd Mayweather make on his fight with Colin McGregor. $100 million. We payed for that. We’re the ones who coughed up the money so they could get paid (McGregor did alright too believe me)
People always wonder what would all the players do if they weren’t making a living playing sports. They are fortunate to become multi millionaire’s playing kids games.
But I think the deeper question is what would fans do without sports. When you work your tail off all day and your job is a drag and your boss is even worse what do you do. You come home and watch Monday night Football and everything is ok. A beer a game and lets do it all again.
Literally Hundreds of thousands of people show up to parades to honor the championship teams of their city. Heroes is an understatement. A winning team can change the entire culture of a city.
So to say that sports doesn’t have any affect on society is ludicrous. Should athletes have a say in political messages? Can and should they do it on their own time. Of course they should. Should they do it during work hours and in conjunction with the National anthem. Well I think we can spend all day agreeing to disagree no matter what side of the fence you are on regarding that issue.
Overall sports is good. Really good. Even better in years when my teams win!!
