Tennis originated in France in the early centuries. It then migrated to England where playing on the grass courts took the country by storm.Tennis found its way to the United States by the 1800’s and was first played on an hour glass shaped court.

The tennis boom of the 80’s with John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl and many others led to the best crop of American players in any one generation.

The United States had 3 men’s players ranked No. 1 in the world in that era. Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Jim Courier. Micheal Chang however was the first of the group to win a grand slam. On the Women’s side welcome Venus and Serena Williams and Lindsay Davenport. By the way thank you the Billie Jean King, Chris Evert Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova for paving the way for these women to make big money.

Nobody really has a handle on how the scoring system was created as far as i know. In tennis love means nothing. then you have 15-30-40 Game. Duce, Ad in, Ad out. People got to lazy to say 15 so for the first point it’s common to say 5 instead of 15.

Maintaining a clay or grass court is very labor intensive which is the reason that  90% of the courts in the United States are hard courts while most countries feature clay courts at a 90% ratio.

Im my opinion learning to play on clay first is an advantage,. You have to learn a complete game with good footwork and conditioning. The chances are that a clay court player will play on a hard court long before a hard court player plays on clay.

In any event let’s get the ball spinning.
